Procedure In Case of Severe Winter Weather or Serious Local Emergency Extreme Weather Protocol 1. Decision not to open the school During the winter months if there is any doubt about the likelihood of the school being open due to severe weather conditions (usually heavy snow) parents should check the school website. Any decision to close the school will also be posted on the school website by 7.30 a.m. 2. Notification of early school closure due to severe weather conditions As is our usual practice, we shall respond to requests from bus companies wishing to collect children early in order to ensure a safe journey home. If this is likely to present any difficulty, children will be advised to inform their parents. It is essential that you discuss this with your child so that he/she knows exactly what to do if the bus brings him/her home early. Once a decision has been made to close the school, children who make their own way home will be notified of when they can leave, and children who need collecting will be allowed to contact parents. Due to the pressure on our phone lines, it would be really helpful if parents would not ring in to find out the ‘state of play’. In order to keep parents fully informed, information will be posted on our website as soon as decisions have been taken. The ultimate success of these procedures depends on each student being aware of any contingency arrangements made for him/her by parents if the school closes early. It is also important that each student has a contact telephone number. Forecasting the local weather is never an exact science and unless information to contrary is published, parents should always assume the school is open. January 2010 |
